Pulp writer Johnston McCulley (1993-1938) was the author of hundreds of short stories and novels, published in pulp magazines under his own name and a plethora of pseudonyms. His most famous creation is, without a doubt, the masked swordsman Zorro, made popular by radio, movie, and television adaptations. But before Zorro hit it big, McCulley tried out dozens of different heroes and antiheroes: Black Star, the Avenging Twins, the Man in Purple, the Green Ghost, the Mongoose, Richard Hughes-Railroad Detective, the Spider, the Thunderbolt, the Crimson Clown...the list goes on and on. And it includes a good-hearted pickpocket with a lisp named "Thubway Tham," pursued by Detective Craddock of the New York Police Department. Thubway Tham got his start in the June 4, 1918, issue of Detective Story Magazine, and continued on through more than 100 original stories in various magazines such as Black Book Detective, Clues, Mike Shayne Mystery Magazine, and The Saint Detective Magazine). Tham's last apperance was in January of 1960. That's quite a run. This volume collects 10 stories (plus a humorous anecdote). 1. Language: English. Narrator: Ken Teutsch. With the theatrical release of the two-part film The Hobbit slated for 2012 and 2013, attention will once again turn to J. R. R. Tolkien's classic works. In a culture where truth is relative and morality is viewed as old-fashioned, we welcome the chance to view the world through hobbit eyes: we have free will, our choices matter, and living a morally heroic life is possible. In this engaging and thought-provoking book, Tolkien expert Matthew Dickerson shows how a Christian worldview and Christian themes undergird Tolkien's Middle-earth writings and how they are fundamentally important to understanding his vision. Toby Tyler is a film released on January 21, 1960 by the Walt Disney Company, based on the 1880 children''s book Toby Tyler, or Ten Weeks with a Circus by James Otis Kaler. It stars several actors best known for their work on the two pioneering Disney television shows of the late 1950s: Kevin Corcoran (better known as Moochie) from the Spin and Marty serials on Mickey Mouse Club, and Zorro co-stars Henry Calvin and Gene Sheldon, who speaks in this movie. This was shot at Golden Oak Ranch in Newhall, California.
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A secret identity is an element of fiction wherein a character develops a separate persona (usually adopting a pseudonym), while keeping their true identity hidden. The character also may wear a disguise (ranging from makeup or a mask, to a complete costume). A character may have several types of secret identities simultaneously (such as adopted names, pen names, undercover identities, and crime fighting codenames). The use of secret identities dates back to early 20th century with characters such as The Scarlet Pimpernel, The Lone Ranger, and Zorro. Starting in the 1930s, the concept of a crime-fighters, superheroes, and vigilantes (and their adversaries) adopting secret identities became more widespread in dime novels, pulp magazines, comic books, old-time radio dramas, movie serials, and other popular fiction. Such characters remain popular to this day.
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Guy Williams (January 14, 1924 May 7, 1989) was an American actor and former fashion model, who played swashbuckling action heroes in the 1950s and 1960s, but never quite achieved movie-star status despite his appearance (including hazel eyes, 6'3" height, and 190 lb. weight) and charisma, which helped launch his early successful photographic modeling career. Among his most prominent achievements were two memorable TV series: Zorro (in black and white -- colorized years later by the Disney enterprise) and Lost in Space, as the father of the Robinson family. The sci-fi TV program was highly popular, noted for the design of the sleek silver spacesuits, which Guy Williams wore in many publicity photos (see image at right).
Names compiles ten years' worth of interviews with as many character actors. These are the supporting players who have made generations of moviegoers blurt out 'I know that actor- Who is that? I've seen him a million times!' These actors' identities have continually eluded most moviegoers. But their unforgettable faces and personalities are another story. Included are exhaustive interviews with: - R. G. Armstrong- Burly, prolific western star-- A perennial movie sheriff, Sam Peckinpah regular, and, unrecognizably, Dick Tracy's arch-nemesis, Pruneface! - Dick Bakalyan- The pugnacious Crown Prince of the Juvenile Delinquent film, familiar Disney movie player, and co-star of films as disparate as Ray Milland's Panic in Year Zero! and Roman Polanski's Chinatown. - Don Pedro Colley- Imposing, regal co-star of Beneath the Planet of the Apes (as the telepathic mutant inquisitor), THX-1138 (as a hologram), and Sugar Hill (as Baron Samedi, king of the zombies). - Royal Dano- In his last interview, Dano recalls his extensive career, working with Alfred Hitchcock, John Huston, Nicholas Ray, Jack Arnold, and dozens of other Hollywood notables. - Jonathan Haze- As part of director Roger Corman's stock company, Haze achieved cinematic immortality as the luckless 'Seymour' in Corman's original The Little Shop of Horrors. Besides his multifarious work with Corman, Haze wrote AIP's manic Invasion of the Star Creatures, and worked behind the cameras with the likes of John Wayne. - Bo Hopkins- A cinematic stalwart of the '70s, whose credits include The Wild Bunch (his debut), The Getaway, Monte Walsh, American Graffiti, and The Day of the Locust. Another perennial movie sheriff! - L. Q. Jones- A western, war, and Peckinpah film staple, and director of the cult science fiction classic, A Boy and His Dog. His recent credits include Casino, The Edge, and The Mask of Zorro. (Also, quite possibly, the funniest character actor alive.) - Buck Kartalian- Diminutive former wrestler and body-builder, best remembered as 'Julius,' the ape jailer of Planet of the Apes. Kartalian's film work ranges from major Hollywood fare (Mr. Roberts, Cool Hand Luke) to some of the wackiest exploitation films ever (The Acid Eaters, Please Don't Eat My Mother!, and Devil's Angels.) - Paul Koslo- Laconic action star of the '70s into the '90s: The Omega Man, Mr. Majestyk, The Losers, Cleopatra Jones, Joe Kidd, ad infinitum. - Marc Lawrence- One of the screen's greatest gangsters, with a career spanning well over 150 feature films and eight decades! Illustrated with over 100 photographs, Names. chronicles the lives of the unsung character men who often outshone the stars that surrounded them. Includes never-before-published interview material.
Did you know that Pocahontas probably never fell in love with John Smith, as the Disney and other film versions of those events pretend? That Godzilla was originally an anti-American and anti-nuclear movie, heavily cut and supplemented with new material? That Zorro was not created by an American author but derived from the much older Mexican struggle for independence? That Anna and the King was largely invented? That the myth of the sexually eager Hula girls is based on misunderstandings by the first explorers? That Black Hawk Down and many other war movies were censored and indirectly subsidized by the Pentagon? Screening Difference takes us on a fascinating voyage through major movie blockbusters that deal with the encounter between 'us,' based on white Hollywood, and 'them,' the filmic representations of other races, ethnicities, and cultures. Looking at subtle orientations in casting and make-up, sets and props, lighting and camera movements, music and language, this lively book follows the best-known genres and subgenres: from animated cartoons to wilderness films, from romantic movies to colonial adventures. Screening Difference tracks the stories back to their origins and patiently dissects the hidden messages that have gradually crept into them.
